TRIL Newsletter April 2009
Welcome to the first TRIL newsletter. The TRIL newsletters will keep you informed of the latest news and developments at the TRIL Centre.
The TRIL Centre’s mission is to discover and deliver technology solutions which support independent living, ideally in a home environment. This will improve the quality of life of older citizens while reducing the burden on carers and on the healthcare system. Funded by Intel and the IDA Ireland, the $30 million project which has begun its third year, has succeeded in bringing together a multi-disciplinary team of approximately 70 researchers.
Ageing Statistics
Over the next 50 years the global population of older people will nearly quadruple. In Ireland, public health costs will rise from 6% of GDP to 9% in 2050. An opportunity to intervene and shift the burden of care from the institution to the home has become a reality. The TRIL Centre's objective is to assist older people to live longer from wherever they call home.

back to top Featured Story: Older Person's view of the TRIL Clinic
A detailed look at an older person's experience of going through the TRIL Clinic is described in the TRIL featured story entitled 'The TRIL Clinic - Supporting Healthy Ageing'.
TRIL FEATURED STORY: TRIL CLINIC
When Aidan arrived at the Emergency Department (ED) of St James’s Hospital in Dublin, Ireland, he was experiencing severe hip pain. In his early eighties, Aidan (not his real name) was living alone and had been self-sufficient until a recent fall brought him to the hospital, where the ED staff examined him and determined that no bones were broken. Another hospital might have sent him home with a prescription for painkillers. Instead, Aidan was referred to a unique clinic within St. James’s that focuses on helping older people to remain healthy and independent.

back to top Visit TRIL exhibit at IAHSA
TRIL Researchers will be showcasing a number of TRIL Research initiatives at the IAHSA Conference in London, which takes place from 20 - 22 July 2009. Both academic and industry representatives will be there. Come and visit our exhibit at the Conference and meet TRIL researchers. The theme of this year's event is 'Leadership Beyond Borders'.
About IAHSA
IAHSA was founded in 1994 by an international group of leaders who realised that the global ageing crisis would have a profound impact on the world's older people. Their vision was to create a platform for policymakers, researchers, business and ageing services providers to collectively share their knowledge and best practices to enhance quality of care for the elderly. Over the years IAHSA has created an international forum for the exchange of research, services, products and training that make up the Global Ageing Network.

back to top Version 2 of BioMOBIUS™ Research Platform
Version 2 of the BioMOBIUS™ Research Platform (www.biomobius.org) will be launched by TRIL shortly. TRIL is currently working on an enhanced version of the original Research Platform which will be available in a few months.
The BioMOBIUS™ Research Platform is a combination of hardware, sensors, software, services and a graphical development environment. This platform helps researchers to reduce the time spent on developing foundational technologies, allowing them to focus on their actual research. Ultimately the platform will enable therapists, clinicians and engineers to rapidly develop and deploy technology solutions for biomedical research
A number of Workshops on BioMoBIOUS™ have taken place where TRIL has demonstrated and presented on the platform. These include the Intel Amberglen Oregon and the EMBC Worskhop in Vancouver both in August 2008. more>>
back to top TRIL Research Paper accepted to CHI 2009 Workshop
Dr Julie Doyle from the TRIL Technology Platform (TTP) has been invited to present a paper at the CHI 2009 Workshop in Boston on 4 April 2009. The paper, “Do Pattern Languages help us Structure Evaluations in Healthcare Technologies?”, written by Dr. Julie Doyle, Dr. Aaron Quigley and Prof. Paddy Nixon from TRIL, will be presented at the CHI (Computer Human Interaction) 2009 workshop on ‘Evaluating New Interactions in Healthcare: Challenges and Approaches’.
The paper examines how 'as healthcare technologies are becoming increasingly pervasive, moving from controlled clinical and laboratory settings to large numbers of home deployments, new challenges arise in evaluating the impact of healthcare technologies and interactions in their context of use'. The paper looks at the potential benefits of using pattern languages to help structure such evaluations. Pattern languages can capture experience, guidelines and methods for evaluation of new healthcare technologies and ultimately help healthcare professionals and researchers to design effective evaluations.
The workshop will provide an opportunity for participants to share experiences and ideas on how to conduct evaluations that will allow assessment of the overall impact of technology in its context of use.
